RS Living: Our Linen Care Guide

Creating clothes that last a lifetime has always been a priority for us and when looked after properly, Linen can last for years. And the best thing - it only gets better with time.

Here are our top tips to help you keep your linen looking its best.

1) Washing

Linen becomes softer and more absorbent after each wash, which is one of the reasons we love it.

For best results, wash on low temperatures or cold water. Use the gentle machine cycle and a mild detergent to protect the fibres.

Be sure to sort your darks and brights from your white linen. Linen is highly absorbent and benefits from being washed separately from others. Remember, never bleach linen as the harsh chemicals damage and degrade the fibres of the cloth.

2) Drying

Once washed, be sure to remove linen from the machine as soon as possible to avoid wrinkling.

Linen is great to dry naturally so avoid the tumble dryer. Don't be shocked if your piece is slightly smaller when you take it out of the machine. Linen absorbs water - once dried and steamed it will be back to normal.

Avoid the urge to stretch and reshape it - this will cause the shape to change. Instead, hang your linen on a soft hanger to let it drop and relax back to size.

3) Pressing

Linen is a luxury yarn, and so requires a little extra TLC. To ensure your linen looks its best, giving it a gentle press or steam which will help it regain its shape and stretch.

It's best to avoid ironing but if necessary, iron on reverse, whilst still a little damp and with a towel on top to avoid burning the fabric.

4) Storage

For best results, hang linen on a sturdy hanger to maintain its shape or lay it flat to help avoid wrinkles.
