We source organic cotton because it is grown without the use of pesticides, insecticides and toxic chemicals. The way it is grown ensures that it is safe for the environment, the farmers and for you.
What is Organic Cotton?
Organic cotton is cotton that is grown and produced according to organic agricultural standards. This means that it does not allow the use of toxic chemicals or GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Although it uses land and water, the land is sustained through crop rotations, ecosystems are preserved and it is usually rain fed, drastically reducing the environmental impact.
How is it made?
Our 100% organic cotton is made by Egedeniz in Turkey. Egedeniz was the first organic textiles company to be certified in Turkey and they grow organic cotton around Izmir in Western Turkey. All of their processes are GOTS certified and they are also on a journey towards sustainability. In 2014, they set up a solar energy system and aim to continue producing their electricity in a more sustainable way, as well as having recently launched a Living Wage Programme.
In some of our products, we use another organic cotton yarn, which is mixed with other fibres, but for now we have only been able to trace the raw material back to North Africa, the fabric is weaved by Lurdes Sampaio.

Why have we chosen to use it?
Organic cotton is better for people and the planet, compared to conventional cotton. Organic farming uses significantly less water, it helps biodiversity flourish due to better soil, and it is better for farmers and their health. Conventional cotton also requires expensive chemicals, which often leave farmers in severe debt. On the other hand, the premium prices paid for organic products can help farmers increase their incomes. Additionally, as a natural material, organic cotton is biodegradable and easy to recycle.
